Farming First

Worth checking out today is a terrific infographic from Farming First, which shows what food, farming and water will most likely look like in 2030. Farming First is a coalition of 131 organizations representing farmers, scientists, engineers and industry, as well as agricultural development organizations—all interested in sustainable agriculture.

The graphic above focuses on water stress, and shows how global water demand will dramatically outstrip supply in less than two decades. By 2050, according to Farming First, “the proportion of the population facing stressed water supplies is expected to increase by 500% and the number facing full water scarcity is expected to increase by 800%.”

What’s more, climate change will likely cut productivity in major crops like rice, wheat and maize. Meanwhile, by 2030, global food demand is predicted to rise 35%. Most of this additional food needs to come from bigger yields or massive reductions in food waste.
